Thoughts/Quotes on Social Justice:
Father Tony Shonis:
If Holy Name is to live the full gospel then it has to put into action the social teachings of the Church; otherwise, it is a deficient Christian Community.
Catholic Church Social justice teaching is a toolbox by which we can judge the policies of our government to see if they conform to the Gospel message. The toolbox is made up of principles and social priorities that the Church teaches are the foundation of human society.
The social justice teaching of the church from the ‘cradle to the grave’ gives Catholics a distinct identity. Today many Catholics are concerned about Catholic identity, if we Catholics lived the full social justice teaching of the Church we would have a distinct identity and we definitely would stand out in society.
Father J. Edward Bradley:
“In the end what matters most is not our intelligence or wit, but the love we show to others.”
Ranni Dillard:
I don’t see how I can call myself a Christian if I don’t try to bring about social justice in the world. This committee provides me an opportunity to work towards this goal.
Jim Roethemeier:
We as individuals and as a parish are very blessed in many ways and for the most part are very thankful for those blessings. But, over time, we become so accustomed to those blessings that we lose sight of how much we do have and how little others have. There is so much more that can be done to help those that for whatever reason are struggling, making the mission of the Social Action Committee so important.
Edward Huff :
The Social Action Committee is important to me because it is a practical application of the social justice principles of the Church on a parish level. It helps bring the Gospel message alive on a very tangible level.
Carol Buckman:
If we take a few moments to stop and look around us it doesn’t take long to notice those who are less fortunate than us. I believe that God expects us to do what Jesus would do by helping out where we can. A church the size of ours has the opportunity to make a very large positive impact on our community without burdening a few individuals. My hope is that the Social Action Committee and its website will help us to organize and communicate opportunities for social action.
Dick Beaven:
I feel it is important that we communicate to the parish all of the services offered by Holy Name. Also I feel that we need to keep our parishioners and the community up to date on the social issues affecting our daily lives.
